Thank you! A very timely nudge to embellish the joy of travel. I think the kids will love it too❤
Thanks for this video 👍👍
You are BEAUTIFUL ❤🥰🌺✨
Hi there. Just came across this video and found it extremely easy to follow. I loved the colour. I have these flowers growing at the moment and going to dye wool with it. Just a quick question - does the colour last?
What kind of spruce? Are these black spruce?
beautiful ladies, in a beautiful place enjoying a new technique. very nice video.
What a wonderful video. Missed this video somehow. And what a beautiful place!
TVP is defatted. That's probably the difference you experienced.
My oak gall is not hard like that it’s more like a thin shell
How do you get iron water???
Can you put the soy milk in the fridge overnight?
Would this work on grey hair?
I don't know if this would work very well on hair, but you can always try it 🤎 If you have success, let us know!
you create the most beautiful content of all time. i'm so happy you exist and decided to share you knowledge with us!
What an absolutely lovely comment for you to share, Joana - thank you so much 🌻💚🌼🤎🌸 Welcome to the Color Quest family!!
Great video ! Thank you ! I love the pinkish shibori piece, but i wander how much lighter it will be when fully dried. Can you boil the alovera leaves for stronger color
Would love to meet up with you and Eileen in maine! We'll see what the schedule allows!
Would be so amazing to have you join us, Eb! Will cross fingers 🤎🤎🤎
Have you tried this on wood? I am looking to make a purple cutting board for my daughter
I'm absolutely sure that these three days will be a wonderfully inspiring video that I can't wait to see. But I am just as eager for the next video in Spain 😍
Wish you could join us in Maine this September, but I will be sure to film as much as possible for Color Quest 🤎 I'm excited to share my natural color adventures from Spain too - was incredible 😊
@@MargaretByrdColorQuest I wish I could but until my husband retires he comes two weekends per month and the other days I live alone on the farm and have to look after my garden, my dogs and my cats. I can't go away and leave them alone 😔
Wowsa! I just subscribed to your channel. I loved this project, not only how you rusted everything, but how you afterward, cleaned off the salt and lose rusted pieces. Thank you for that follow up, which most never bother to tell you about. Your pieces came out magnificent!! Thank you for this presentation.
I feel like I’ve found treasure here! Thank you so much! Will be back for more research 💜☮️Please take care and wish me luck! 🌱🌻
How awesome to hear - welcome to Color Quest! Best of luck - you got this 🌼
thanks for this video! can i do this same process with marigolds?
You bet! Welcome to Color Quest 🌼 Coreopsis and sulfur cosmos are great pH shifters, but marigold doesn't have the same sensitivity. You might see a slight brightening with acidic shifts, but nothing drastic. Why not experiment and see what you find?
WOW! looks amazing :) I would absolutely LOVE to meet you and come to a retreat! I was selfishly thinking somewhere in the UK so I could easily attend - the Scottish Highlands or the Lake District :) but the Azores would be absolutely incredible xxx
Awwww....would love to have had you along in Baja, but the Azores seems like a perfect place for us to meet and play with natural color in 2025 😘 I am trying to move around the globe a bit in hopes of meeting more of our Color Quest family in person. Of course, the Scottish Highlands or Lake District would also be wonderful destinations, so I can put them on my wish list for 2026 and beyond 🌼🤎🌼
@@MargaretByrdColorQuest wonderful 🥳💕
Love the video I just did This and dipped my shirt in the dye and made tie dye shirt by rolling it up and dipping the blue dye into vinnager
How awesome to hear! I just love pH shifting with natural color. Hope you have a chance to experiment with some other traditional organic dyes that are more long-lasting 💜💙💚
Wow! Wonderful! I am so happy for you, sweet souls!💚💐
You are a sweet soul, Malathie 🌼 Happy you could join us virtually through this video. Would love to have had you along!
I LOVE native-land!!! So happy to see them get a shout out! (I know this video is old but still!)
Never too old to celebrate our native land 🤎 Thank you for your sweet shout-out 🌻
A trip to a wonderful location with wonderful company and inspiring creations completed a video that magically transported me to the land of colours. Thank you ❤
Such a beautifully written comment - thank you! I'm so happy you could feel the amazing energy and be with us in spirit 🌼🤎🌼

💚💚💚
Loved your tutoring. I am interesting in working with charmuese silk. Or other silks.
So sweet of you to say - welcome to Color Quest 🌼 Silk is by far the simplest fiber to work with in eco-printing, so enjoy experimenting with charmeuse. You are going to love it!
How colourfast is the rust?
Thanks for the question, Deb 😊 Iron is a natural mordant, so since rust is a form of iron oxide, it is considered to be very colorfast and stable.
Can I drink this water
Absolutely not - this iron water is only to be used for natural dyeing projects and should be handled carefully as it can be irritating to the skin.
Hello...I enjoy your videos immensely. I'm wondering tho if you discuss responsible diaposal of chemicals/additives/shifters? I'm an off-grid dyer so always look into these things before trying them. From what I've been reading CALX is a hazardous material that has to be handled very carefully...cannot go down drains/into sewers without being neutralized first...and even that in small amounts. How are you neutralizing the CALX? Ty!
Thanks so much for being here with us at Color Quest 🌼 Great question regarding neutralizing CALX. As a high level alkaline, you could try neutralizing it by slowing adding water and a citric acid solution or a natural acid like vinegar or lemon juice. I am unable to give you a measurement, but if you have access to litmus paper, you can check to make sure the solution is back to a neutral pH before disposing of it.
I’m new to dyeing and always on the lookout for plants I can dye with. My cat died on Tuesday and on Wednesday I had a dream that he had left me something in the bushes that he sat in for his last week of life ( he was dying of cancer) And there it was - a Rubia Tinctorum (madder). I thought it was a Galium aparine (cleavers) at first. They look so similar. So now I will dye something in his honour with the Madder roots I harvested that he told me were there. ❤
This is such a sweet and tender story in the midst of the sorrow of losing your cherished cat - thank you for sharing ❤ I love how the universe gently points us to the beauty around us in her mysterious ways if we open our hearts. May the madder root bring about gorgeous shades that will be a living memory of your precious pet.
I'm from the West Coast of Vancouver Island and which has many of the same plants as where you are. The cones that you are finding that look like Spruce cones to you are actually Douglas Fir cones. And the plant that looks like Holly is actually called Oregon Grape or Berberis Nervosa. Hopefully that helps!
Thank you so much for helping to identify some of our shared flora 💚 I should have remembered Oregon Grape since I harvested it for color in the summer months a few years ago, but without its fruit, it was just a prickly bush 😊
I just mordanted some t shirts with soy milk. I saw that dyeing with pomegranate rind makes a darker color when dyed with cotton mordanted with soy milk, so I am planning to do this. But am I right about this? Would there be any extra precautions to take? Also, I wonder what other natural dyes do well with the soy mordanted cotton.
Great questions, Jane 🌼 Soy milk as a binder is a great option for cellulose fibers like cotton if you do not have tannin or alum as mainstay mordants in your studio. Although I have found color results to be lighter with soy milk, using high tannin dye matter like pomegranate is a great option for deeper colors. Pomegranate is used as a tannin mordant, so you get the double binding power of both. I suggest you stick with other easily sourced high tannin dyes like onion skins, avocado skins/pits, black tea, etc to play around with the process. One very important tip is to always make sure your fibers are well washed and wet when you do any dyeing as this helps with the best color uptake. Have fun!
@@MargaretByrdColorQuest Thanks for your reply. So when I get ready to dye my t shirts, I simmer them in the pomegranate skin dye for an hour; then let them stand in the dye bath overnight. I have another question: I am planning to tie dye a couple. Are there any precautions I should take with the tie dyed shirts, or is it okay to let them sit in the dye bath that long? There won't be too much of a chance of the dye bleeding into the tied areas?
@@janesawyer1342 Yes - heat is an important part of the process in natural dyeing to encourage color from the dye matter and help in adhering to the fiber. Time is also a great way to deepen the color, so I often let my fibers sit in the dye bath as it cools and often overnight. You will not hurt the fiber doing this - you can pull it out when you are satisfied with the color. Remember though, wet fiber will look darker and will lighten when it dries. You will want to make sure your tie dye is binded very tightly and/or there are a lot of fiber folds to keep areas 'protected' from dye seeping into the tied area. It is always possible you will have some seepage since the fibers will be wet, but this also gives a lovely gradient effect. You could skip the step of wetting out your fiber before/after binding it which is typically recommended for better dye uptake, but might minimize the wicking effect. My best advice is to experiment and be open to any result you may get as a wonderful gift of color from nature 😊
@@MargaretByrdColorQuest Thanks. I did go ahead and tie dyed a couple of tee shirts. I am pleased with the main color, but yes the tied parts are a little washed out. I am going to see if I can make them look better by bleaching the tied areas with bleach and a q tip.
Or, I could leave them be and iron on beautiful transfers on the fronts.
Caption should read, sample of.... not- how to
There are two videos that show how these samples were made on my channel (referenced in the description). The short was created to invite natural color enthusiasts to Color Quest. Enjoy 🌸

Sweetest comment ever! Thank you so much for being such an awesome part of Color Quest 🌼
Would it be alright to keep it in the refrigerator? I live in a hot climate, It was day 2 for me, and when I went to remove the fabric, the soy milk solution has curdled.
Yes, of course! I've also had it curdle on me, so definitely store in the coolest space you have, and feel free to shorten the time the fiber is in the soy milk as well.
It's okay to spin dry the cloth, even though the washing machine sprays it as it is spin drying?
Yes, no problem at all. A little water added to the spin dry will not bother soy milk bind 😊
Good evening ma'am, How to prepare leaves before printing.
Welcome to Color Quest! In this video, the leaves were fresh so I didn't do anything to them, but you can rehydrate them in water before using them which can help with printing. You can also soak them in an iron or acidic bath (vinegar) for color modification. Always fun to experiment and try different techniques 😊
Thanku ma'am
B u t ful experience & eco printing! Thx for your inspiration 💜
I feel so very lucky, and its double fun to share it with you, Debora, and the whole Color Quest family 💚
It's an oak gall. Oak trees get this abnormality by a female wasp inserting their eggs into the tree buds.
Welcome to Color Quest! Many thanks for sharing more about the magic of oak galls 🐝
Is so amazing But how about black dye how it fix or made from onion peel
Welcome to Color Quest, Chris! Creating black from natural colors typically involves iron and over-dyeing. I've never tried it with onion skin as the base color, but go check out my video on making black with pomegranate and logwood as an overdye to see one way of doing it 🤎
Wow! Wonderful! Doing what you love and loving what you do.💚💐👋👋
Perfectly said, Malathie - always love to hear from you 🌸💕😊
Does anyone know if you have to do the yellow dye extraction or if you can go straight to the pink? Can't find anything about it. I'm experimenting with it but was curious if anyone already has. I did half my petals in a first/ yellow extraction and then added the other/unsimmered half to them in the alkaline bath, to see if anything could be done with them. I can imagine maybe getting richer color because none of it has been used for the yellow extraction, but I can also imagine it not working at all or there being some science-y reason it had to be done with the yellow extraction steps first. I've read articles about deep orangey reds being extracted from safflower in ancient China, so I'm trying something different
Awesome question, Jasmine 🌸 I have only worked with safflower 'successfully' in this video and I definitely leeched out much of the yellow first. It sounds like you are experimenting which is the only suggestion I would have - try it out with a very small amount of petals to see if you can go straight to an alkaline bath soak with an acidic neutralizer and achieve pink or some combination of yellow/pink, ie. deep orangey red hues? Let us know how it goes!
@MargaretByrdColorQuest so I thought it was a total failure. The whole batch was still yellow after neutralizing it. So the next day I dumped it out in my compost pile and a swatch of linen came out onto the compost pile, dyed red! I don't know how it even got in the vat. But even though the vat still looked yellow and the fibers came out yellow when I dipped them in, apparently with time, the process did work and they did become red/ pink with soaking. So I scraped as many petals as I could back out of the compost to try again and have a newly neutralized bath with fibers in it, trying again. This had been my second attempt with safflower so maybe I was too quick to think it was another failure. As far as achieving red/ pink without the yellow extraction, the jury is still out. I don't believe it worked. I did half my dyestuff with a yellow extraction and half without, and they were mixed together for the red extraction. At the end of the red extraction, the first (yellow) petals looked dull and cooked and spent, but the others were still red and vibrant, so I don't believe they did anything, in the end
@@jasminehoover5359 Thank you so much for sharing more of your experimentation 🌸 I totally understand how you thought the dye had not shifted to a true pink/red. Although I could see a change as I neutralized it, it stayed more in the orange realm, so I was also wildly surprised to see the hot pink colors that attached to the fibers 💕 The initial hint I got was the dye stain on the paper towel that was pink from where the dye had spilled a bit 😊 So happy you kept going - learn by doing is always the way to figure things out and have fun along the way! I may try jumping straight to pink next time I play with safflower in my dye studio - will let you know 🤎
Traveling again!!! Glad you enjoyed it! This is a great idea! I need to try this!!! TFS! Austin TX USA
Can't stop...won't stop! Wanderlust is in my blood 😊 Definitely give it a try the next time you are out and about, Barbara!
Thank you for making this useful and informative video. I’m wondering if you might share the brand/source of the indigo in your vat? Again- much appreciation to you for your generosity and textile experience ❤️🦋
My pleasure, Yvonne - welcome to Color Quest 🌼 I inherited this iron vat already made at the Indigofest I attended last August, so I'm not sure where they sourced the indigo powder. I buy mine from Botanical Colors and Maiwa which both sell 100% natural indigo and have built vats from both 💙
Thank you so much ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
You are most welcome 💙💙💙
when out foraging for Earth pigments i just look for a larger flat stone to use as a mortar and a round or longish smooth stone for a pestle. it works perfectly : ) and saves having to haul a heavy mortar and pestle around : )
Excellent suggestion! I just did the same while traveling in April to make hammer printed postcards from flowers along the way 🌼
@@MargaretByrdColorQuest wow what a wonderful concept!!! ✨
@@theianyx6394 Was lots of fun too!
